PSOD on ESX 5.1 upgrade - Could not load multiboot modules:bad parameter

Hello all,

I am receiving the pink screen of death and the error “Could not load multiboot modules:bad parameter” when trying to upgrade from ESX 4.1 to ESXi 5.1 on a Dell PowerEdge R210-II with 32 GB of RAM. According to the HCL it is supported. BIOS is running at latest supported version of 2.8.0.

I found the VMWare KB below but could not find any module errors in the /var/log/messages file:

ESX/ESXi driver module fails to load and reports the error: Bad parameter (1038247) | VMware KB

Server specs are as follows:

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/spc_r210_II_new.pdf

Any ideas why its not working?

Solution to PCI-X on Dell Poweredge R630

Hi everyone, i have a Poweredge R630 server, and i need to use a LTO3 tape drive from IBM, that tape drive uses a SCSI connector, but my SCSI card(PCI-X) does not fit in the Dell Riser that comes with the server.

I need an ideia of solution.

My SCSI card does not fit in any slot of the server, does the dell  have any riser compatible with PCI-X slot? or a SCSI board low profile that fits in this server?

Anyone have a sugestion?

Jorge Aranda.

T410 Power Supply connections

I have T410 with a non-redundant PSU (525W). I think it has failed/failing because when I plug in the cord the fan starts and I can hear it speeding up then slowing down, and there are clicking sounds coming from (I think) inside the PSU. It's like it can't quite get going. Both of the indicator LEDs on the PSU stay dark.

1 - how can I tell for sure it is the PSU and not (for example) the fan, or some motherboard capacitor or ???

2 - I have read the hardware manual to see how to replace the PSU (see https://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_poweredge/poweredge-t410_owner%27s%20manual_en-us.pdf page 123) and it wants me to "Disconnect all the cables from the system board and drives." Does that mean disconnect the cables from the back of the PSU but leave them connected to the other system components ... OR ... leave them connected tot he PSU and disconnect them from the other system components. In other words - do the cables come with a new PSU or not? PS - they are REALLY hard to disconnect from the back of the PSU!!!

Hi,

For r710 server that I have i've purchased a memory kit: 2 piece of 8 GB.

The current Ram config is 4 modules of 2 GB each.

the server is dual CPU, so the memory are in A1 A2 and B1 B2.

could you please help how to arrange to dimms so it can work with all of them.

Separately it work but not together, and i've tried different configurations.

Thanks

Can I open the case of an R710 while the power is on?

Possible hardware/driver issue with DELL Poweredge R720

Hello,

We are running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3 on DELL Poweredge R720 Servers. We are experiencing some issues with networking timeouts and have discovered the following information in dmesg and using lspci:

[root@hostx ~]# cat /var/log/dmesg | grep collision

[root@hostx ~]# lspci -v | grep Eth
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe
01:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe
02:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe

We are trying to determine if these messages are in any way related to the network timeout issues we are experiencing and if perhaps a firmware, bios or driver update could address the problem?

QLogic network driver installation failure

Hi, I am currently updating a number of R710 servers with the QLogic v20 drivers (Network_Driver_MVXGT_WN64_20.0.0_A00-00 under Server 2012 R2. The firmware has also been updated to Network_Firmware_WR5R5_WN64_08.07.25_A00-00 prior to installation of the network driver.

A number of servers have completed successfully (although there can be long delays where network connectivity is cut off whilst the driver installs) but on one particular server the installer is timing out after two hours with "The update installer operation is unsuccessful".

The log file indicates that there was some problem deleting a file, but doesn't state what file and in what location. I have tried tracing it using Procmon but it doesn't show any file system delete failures.

Is there a way to make this log more verbose so it logs every file operation during install?

The only difference on this server compared to the others is that it is not domain joined and the local administrator account has been renamed. I have tried creating a new user account with admin rights but the problem persists.

Hi,

For my AS180 KVM i've tried to apply the latest firmware R173924, via RS232 cable from w2k r2 64bit.

The update returned the time-out error while upgrading; now my kvm no longer works.

I've tried running the update again and again... same error

If you have any advice.

thank you

PowerEdge 2950 cluster problems

I have a solution containing 2 Power Edge 2950 servers as 2 nodes cluster operating with windows 2003 server and connected to a shared storage MD3000i via SAS connections. This solution was working correctly since 2009. a small period ago we added new Hdd's to the storage since then Node 2 cannot access the storage and the cluster doesn't fail over and the cluster service is up and running on one Node.

Could you please help. And if this solution is not supported and cannot be fixed could any body help by stating  this officially. Or how to get an official statement about this solution to provide to customer.

I've seen a couple of posts on being able to use 16gig ram sticks in an r710 with a firmware upgrade. But I am unclear on the proper installation in the three memory channels (3 per cpu). Could someone please lay it out for me? I want to purchase 96 gigs total ... 6 sticks which contain 16 gigs per stick.

Hello everybody

We have an PowerEdge R730xd Server and installed two SSDs via PCI Slot.

We have 4 Slots (2 different Cards):

1. Riser 1 - Slot2_G3_X8(CPU2)

2. Riser 1 - Slot3_G3_X8(CPU2)

3. Riser 2 - Slot4_G3_X16(CPU2)

4. Riser2 - Slot5_G3_X8(CPU1)

Does it matter in which one we install the two SSDs (performance issues..)

Thank you!

Dell PowerEdge T320/T420 Internal SAS Tape Drive

Hello,

I am trying to install an LTO4 SAS Tape Drive into a Dell PowerEdge T320 tower server.  I have the Tape Drive and the H310 SAS Controller/HBA for connecting to the drive but I can't find the correct cable to go from the Drive to the H310.#

I was going to use P/N:  606JD which is listed at the TBU Cable for T610/T710 but not sure if that is the correct cable for this unit.

Any assistance would be massively appreciated.

Thank you

Slow NIC Issue on Dell R610

I installed Centos 7 64bit on my R610 and the NIC is slow, despite the Cisco switch set to full duplex and GigE speed. It matches the server too. I've updated the NIC driver as well, rebooted and still my speed tests using Cachefly is roughly 1MBps. It shoudl be at least 20+.

Memory PowerEdge R420

Hello all!

I want to increase the memory on the PowerEdge R420 server, because OS not used all CPU cores...

Current configuration:

 - Two processors: Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2407

 - Two memory: 2 x 4GB (Slot: A1 and B1)

I think to buy two memories 2 x 4GB and install them to slots: A4 and B4.

But the documentations (Page 46) have string "NOTE: 16 GB quad-rank RDIMMs are not supported."? what does mean? :

Thank you for all recomendations!!!
