Ceph on C2100: on going SSD woes

I've been running C2100 systems for my ceph osd nodes. I run 3 SSDs per C2100 for journaling and all is fine once I insert the drives, format and get them mounted. However, after a few days of regular operation, the SSDs one by one just disappear from the OS completely. Techs reseat the SSDs which always gets things working again and the drives show back up via the megacli tools. And the problem starts all over again w/ the drives just disappearing one by one.

The 2.5" SSDs are currently screwed into holes in the 3.5" caddy . This is great b/c it means that I don't need 2.5" to 3.5" adapters. However, the drives disappear.

I tried using 2.5" adapters placed inside of the 3.5" caddy and that didn't change the outcome . SSDs still either virbrate out or just disappear from the OS and need to be reseated.

No problem w/ the 3.5" disks installed in the other bays. No problem with the internal SSDs at all.

I don't have this problem on my R510 systems.

Anyone else having this problem ? Or recommend a solution ?

PE R710 Memory Upgrade

I am installing new memory modules in 2 different R710's and both have dual x5650 processors.  I installed 8 x 16gb modules per system 4 per processor. I installed in, A6-A3-A5-A2  B6-B3-B5-B2 1 machine boots show memory @128gb and running at 1333mhz and shows no signs of issues until I try to login to server 2008 R2 enterprise.  At this point it get to setting up desktop and never goes any further, no spinning icon or anything just the words.

Second machine has same install but shows that the memory is in a non optimal configuration and then finishes boot.  This is system is running ESXI and has vcenter installed with 6 virtual machines.  All machines boot and seem to run normally, however I cant access Vcenter  with the domain credentials like we normally can, I have to use ip and root username and passwords.

We return old memory to systems and everything works again.  I have never seen memory stop me from logging into a machine.  Have I installed the 16gb memory modules in the wrong slots for this to work?

PE SC1425 Monitor?

So I was just gifted a PowerEdge SC1425 by a friend who has upgraded to a better system. 

I went ahead and purchased a 16GB RAM upgrade: 4X4 ECC-REG-PC2-3200-4GB from amazon that say they are are specifically for the PowerEdge SC1425

I also went ahead and ordered 2 4TB Hard Drives that were also specifically made for the machine.

Now I am by no means a computer guy.  I was able to open the system and install them but when I tried to power it on the Monitor/Screen I had laying around didn't turn on.

I have honestly never tried to fire this machine up but according to the person who gifted it to me it should work.

Does this system require a self powered monitor? The one I am attempting to use doesn't have a separate power cable, just the VGA plug.

I have only ever worked with Macintosh systems so I am unfamiliar with what I need to do to get this running.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanx in advance community! :-)

Do MPUIQ-VMCHS SIP Modules work on Dell PowerEdge 180AS KVM?

Hello.

We have a Dell PowerEdge 180AS KVM (updated with the lastest available firmware version 1.0.3.3) and Avocent MPUIQ-VMCHS SIP Modules. According to the compatibility chart in 

it should work, but the SIP modules are shown as "suspect" in the KVM.

The power led of the SIP is lit but we cannot get it to "active" state.

Any idea what can be wrong and how to solve it?

Dell T20, T1700, 9020: Motherboard pinouts: Case upgrade

Hello,

I have the Dell T20 1225v3 Server and wanted to upgrade the stock case to a large aftermarket case. 

Has anyone done this? 

My main concern is the non-standard front I/O connector and was wondering is there is a work around to get the pinouts for the front I/O or possibly an adapter. 

Also, the System Fan and Power switch connectors look standard, is this true or are they different ? 

I need to upgrade the case as adding a Video card has increase my Case's internal temperatures quite a bit and the current airflow from the singe 90mm fan is just not sufficient.

hardware configuration for vps server

hi

we wish to put up around 20 vps guest servers each with around 100 - 200 gb hdd space and 4 to 8 gb of ram per server  -- both windows / linux servers

Could you kindly guide us concerning the same on the following points

1) which model of dell server to choose

2) we are looking 2 X octa core processors to handle the above. will this suffice

3) ram 128 gb -- will this suffice ?

4) we are looking at multiple - 900 gb - 10000 rpm drive - raid 1+0 combination

5) high availability.

6) which host operating system is recommended,

if anybody has prior experience in this, require your help in this

Question about iDRAC Express & LCC Repair

Hello all!


I am new to working with iDRAC and LCC and am trying to fix a problem with a SMBs T610.  The way it was hooked up, all ethernet connections are going through a chinsy Realtek AIB and I just discovered the bit about the Express's NIC sharing with OBP1 and was just wondering how that works.  I could probably answer my question by poking through the BIOS and FW interface but it is a production server so I am going to have to schedule downtime and wanted to be prepared for when I have it cabled properly.


When you assign an IP address via the FW interface that is within the LAN subnet, does it just become pingable?


Second Q for you with a preface: I tried my best to research this issue the server is having in general and one suggestion was to repair the LCC.  Another was to drain the "flea power" from the iDRAC to get it out of this "firmware upgrade already in progress" funk.  Is the USC file basically like a firmware BIN that I can feed into iDRAC when I get it working?

R815 Error code 2900:0221 CPU voltage sensor

One of our R815 servers (fitted with quad AMD 6380 Opteron CPUs) halted and powered off during the night last week and on arrival in the server room, I noticed the LCD display had turned orange with a warning about a CPU voltage regulator being out of limits. After disconnecting the AC power cords, waiting a few seconds and reconnecting I powered the server back on again and the LCD message cleared and the server booted normally.

So I ran the UEFI hardware diagnostics and it came up with one error:

Test Results: fail

Device : IPMI

test : IPMI System_Event_Log_Check

Error Code 2900:0221

Msg: IPMI - Nov 04 18:08:34 2015: processor:: Voltage sensor (1.2V VDDR)

state asserted "CPU1"

Is this something to be worried about since the server has been running at full load on all 64 CPU cores for 5 days without any problems? Or does the error message actually refer to the IPMI/BMC processor CPU and not one of the Opteron CPUs?

C1100 Memory problem

HI,
I recently upgraded my C1100 server's memory to 96GB, but there are several problems.


Question 1

I check the user manual, but the memory part is not understood,
I now installed the 12 * Hynix 8GB 2Rx4 PC3L-10600R-9-12-E2 memory,
Although there are 1333, but when I use aida64,CPU-Z to view the memory display is 1066.

I found a knowledge base document (www.dell.com/.../EN)
Indicate the configuration of 12 8G DDR3 1333, but without a more detailed description.

How to work at 1333?

IPMI logged a memory error.

Hi,

I have one  PE-R620 server, Morning server was stuck in post with "Multibit ECC errors were detected on the RAID controller. If you continue, data corruption can occur. Contact technical support to resolve this issue. Press 'X' to continue or else power off the system, replace the controller and reboot".then i was pressed x key now server is working properly.No any hardware error found in Dset Report

server is in  cluster with 5 same configuration Hp server and 1 same model PE-R620 server.

Pls suggest next step for this issue. if need to update firmware then it possible to update only that server firmware it is safe for cluster or any else.

I have Dell Power Edge R720 installed four 8 gb Memory totally 32 gb. Per Cpu has 16 gb memory. I wanted to upgrade these memory and bought six 16 GB ram (Dell 20D6F) module.

Which configuration I should pluged Memory in to R720 ?

Can't update the Lifecycle Controller -R610 - Secure Copy Failure

I have an R610 I'm trying to update and am running into a problem.

I'm trying to go from 1.3.0.350 to the current 1.7.5.4.  I'm installing from within the OS (2012 R2).  It starts to go and then errors out with

Execution Status:
Update Failure: Secure Copy Failure.  The secure copy function has failed

Anyone have any idea what that means or how I can get this updated?

Fan 4 speed may change depending on system configuration and option card install

On the R410 when booting up the message comes out:

Fan 4 speed may change depending on system configuration and option card install.

Boot up continues only after pressing F1 or F2.
The 4th cooler is working on high load all the time.

Tried to change BIOS settings and saving it, but no help.
What is this issue and how to resolve it?

BIOS Upgrade on Dell PowerEdge R710

We have an old PowerEdge R710 that currently has BIOS v2.0.13 installed. We recently purchased 12 16 GB DIMMs to upgrade the memory to 192 GB. I read on a separate post that in order to get the bus speed to support 1333 MHz that the BIOS needed to be upgraded to v6.4.0

I am not sure if this is supported. I am not sure if I would need to install or upgrade other applications or drivers. We are planning on installing VMWare Hypervisor 5.1.

Can we upgrade BIOS straight from v2.0.13 to v6.4.0?

Any help appreciated! Thank you!

R410, h700, The attempted feature is not licensed to run on this system

I'm running out of time, because I have to place the server soon. 

But I got an old version 2013 of the H700 firmware, I decided to update it to the newest recent version @2015. 

But the problem is, I tried to do this on Linux, but I got this message 'The attempted feature is not licensed to run on this system '

Any idea why? I'm using an h700 in an R410 server.

Mix and match c series nodes

If I have two different PowerEdge C6100 servers, one with 2.5" drives and one with 3.5" drives, are the nodes still compatible with one another?

If I replace a node from the server with 2.5" drives with a node from a server with 3.5" drives, will it still work?

PowerEdge T430 delays due to "issue with logistics"

I am not new to ordering hardware from Dell, and understand the occasional delay, but there is usually a straight forward explanation.... but not this time.

Placed an order for a $16,000 PowerEdge T430 and have been told twice that the order is being delayed.  The most recent of which threatened to cancel my order if I did not respond with approval.

So I called today to ask exactly what is holding up the order, thinking that a particular part is backordered and that a substitute could be used instead.  But after four calls, each with absurd delays before being connected, and being hung up on multiple times when I requested to speak with a supervisor, I finally got a supervisor that could only say that the delay is due to "issue with logistics."

The supervisor could not explain what that meant, but did assure me that it was not because of a delay of any particular part being backordered.  He said it has something to do with a problem in 'the warehouse' and I asked if perhaps there was a fire or a flood that damaged the equipment while in production.  He said he did not know and unfortunately did not have any way to investigate further (would not call the warehouse to ask).

Are other people also experiencing delays in the fulfillment of PowerEdge T430 orders?

Should I just cancel and go with Lenovo or HP instead? 

This delay will be costing us about $10,000 a month for the software that we intended to have a vendor install on it and now have basically no time to prepare the machine for the software installation, when we ordered we thought we would have a month to configure and test bare metal recovery of the system before putting it into production.

T430 RAM

I have DELL Poweredge-T430 Server, with 1TBx4 Hard drive & 8 RAMs each 8-GB in 8 out of 12 slots.

Now I want to increase it's RAM in remaining 4 slots.

It is possible to use 16 GB each RAM in other 4 slots while my previous RAMs are of 8 GB???

Does this combination of 8 GB RAM and 16 GB RAM works properly????
