Lifecycle controller boots to black screen with cursor KVM/iDrac- R810

I have a group of R810s that I was getting ready to do updates in our environment. all of them were at the following levels:

BIOS Version 2.9.0
Firmware Version 1.98 (Build 08)
Lifecycle Controller Firmware 1.6.5.12

After hitting f10 at boot I would clear the loading screen for the lifecycle controller and the screen resolution would change, but I just remain at a black screen with a cursor indefinitely, I checked this on both our KVM system and on iDrac with the same result. I updated on server to the firmware listed below with no change.

BIOS Version 2.9.0
Firmware Version 1.99 (Build 06)
Lifecycle Controller Firmware 1.6.5.12

Is there any resolution to this issue? Thanks!

Dell PowerEdge R410 (SAS) not recognising disks.

Hello,

I've bought a refurbished Dell R410, with a SAS backplane and an PERC S100 controller. BIOS version 1.12 and PERC version 2.0.0.16*** (or something like that).

My problem is that I cannot get it to recognise any disks, no matter what I do. I've tried to turn off the SATA-controller, set it to RAID, AHCI or ATA. I've tried with (2) SATA disks (SSD), two SAS disks; One 2.5, and one of them an official 3.5 Dell drive. All for naught. The RAID configuration utility is unable to find the disks, and so is the BIOS. Nothing shows up when I try to change the boot order, it just tells me there are no bootable disks.
Now, I'm not sure if I should be seeing some other configuration tool. I've seen a few posts online mention that something should be displayed before the CTRL + R option for the RAID controller, but I don't get anything like that. Just a brief mention of the backplane's version and such. Only if I've turned off the SATA controller though.

I'm at my wits end here, and I'm beginning to wonder if something is broken. As such I was hoping anyone here could be so kind as to help me figure out this mystery?

If you need any more information, please let me know. If I don't know it off hand, I can get it posted on Monday when I get to work.

SATA DOM on PowerEdge r210ii?

$

Hello, I recently acquired a PowerEdge r210ii and plan to set it up as a home server. I haven't received it yet, so apologies in advance for some vaguely-worded statements and questions. :-) I'd like to use SATA DOM for the boot volume (to avoid a slow USB device and keep the 3.5" drive bay free) and happen to have one handy from an old SuperMicro server that I'm retiring. However, I can't find anything in any of the documentation available referencing SATA DOM, and general googling doesn't turn up anything, either. Based on this information (or lack thereof), the power for the module (5V) won't likely be supplied through the SATA port, so I'll have to power it some other way. It looks like there's a USB header near the SATA ports, but I'm assuming this is already being used for the external USB ports on the front panel. I also see what looks like a free four-pin fan power header near the battery, so that might be an option. Anyway, has anyone had any luck with SATA DOM on an r210ii or similar model (r210, r410, r620)? Are they any other strategies I'm overlooking here? Thank you, Mike

Dell socket 1567 motherboard that doesn't require chassis to work

I have socket 1567 cpu's. It is very hard to find motherboards that won't cost an arm and a leg that is socket LGA1567. I see some M910 and R810 motherboards out there for sale that I can afford. I've talked with a Dell Support Engineer who said that some motherboards will not work unless you have the blade/server chassis. I want to be able to buy a motherboard, a power supply, RAM, etc, and all the other components and put together a white box server myself using these LGA1567 cpu's but not have to spend close to $800 and over on a SuperMicro or equivalent socket 1657 motherboard. What PowerEdge model motherboard can I buy with the matching Dell power supply but without the chassis that I can build a white box server with? I understand this is not supported but I would greatly appreciate your help, input, or comments. Thank you! :)

PowerEdge 2950 Revision 3

Hi,

I have a Power Edge 2950 server which I acquired a year ago for a home lab using VMware. It had 16GB RAM (using 8 x 2GB DIMMS). The system was rock solid with no errors reported.

Recently I decided to upgrade the memory from 16GB (using 8 x 2GB) to 64GB (using 8 x 8GB) and this caused issues with VMware both when booting from an existing installation on the HDD and via the CD-ROM media. Basically the system is going VERY slow when processing the "s.v000" file and the screen display refresh rate is also slow. Eventually after 40 minutes, all the VMware files are loaded but the machine crashes.

If I take out two banks of the RAM leaving 48GB in the machine, VMware will boot from the HDD and CD-ROM media and is orders of magnitudes faster processing the system files. The screen refresh rate is also noticeably faster.

I have also swapped the RAM modules around and have convinced myself that it is not the RAM. I don't think it is the slot either as the system was working with 16GB RAM before. I have tried this with VMware versions 4.0, 5.0, 5.5 and 6.x all with the same result. This seems to only affect VMware, as booting the server with Linux seems to work with all 64GB RAM!

The BIOS version is 2.2.6 and I have noticed that the latest BIOS is 2.7 - is it worth flashing? Could this fix the problem? Am I in any danger of bricking the server?

I could just leave two sticks of RAM out of the server, but I would like to use all 64GB if possible

Many thanks in advance for the help

Mark.

We are getting the "idrac communication failure" error and we had done  some troubleshoot that has already posted by dell for this issue. we have done the following troubleshoots, but no help

I don't know it should be an idrac6 firmware issue and please help for the following,

1) Please share me the necessary files for idrac6 firmware update?

Hi,

We  bought three pallets of Dell Poweredge M1000E which has M600 blades on them. There are 12 chassis and 192 blades total. We bought this item from Sweden and in order to clear the US customs we needed to fill up the FCC   FORM 740 which needs FCC ID. We have service tag# but it says they are out of warranty and item location as Sweden. Can some help please how to get the FCC ID# on this items for custom purpose ? I don't need any warranty or so on this item.

Dell iDRAC7 query

Hi Guys,

When I power down a server, why is it that the idrac stops responding? isn't the idea behind the idrac that it works when the server is off?! power is still going to it.

Its in shared mode? is something missing? It is a Dell r720

strange issue of slow ping times and sluggish response

$

hi

we have several R420 servers intel 2.5 ghz hex core processors with hyper threading. these are close to 1 year old.

16 / 32 gb ram

1) of these 4 servers are with linux - no raid

primary hdd - 600 gb 15k rpm

3 drives with data 2tb drives

-- mail server with medium / high traffic

2) windows vps servers

600 gb x 2 drives raid 1 (host os)

600 gb x 2 drives raid 1 (guest os)

we have two guest vps per server

our issue is that on all these servers on a random basis (once in 15 days to a few months) we find that server gives sluggish response / high cpu usage for all processes.

this issue is experienced only in the linux and vps servers and happens even during off-office hours when there is no usage on the servers.

the higher the i/o usage of the server the more frequently this issue occurs.

there is no antivirus on these servers.

the important point i noticed is that even ping to 127.0.0.1 is slow on both linux and windows servers.

on linux ping to 127.0.0.1 gives response of 0.3 to 0.4 ms whereas it should normally be around 0.03 ms. ie it taking 10 times more time than normal.

in the vps servers, ping to 127.0.0.1 show 1 ms (should be < 1ms) and ping time from host to guest is 3-4 ms -- should be < 1 ms.

there is plenty of spare RAM, disk space -- only cpu usage is high

hard disk read/write is like normal though ie comparable with other servers.

the network card is broadcom 1 gbps.

we checked using harddisk, ram and network performance monitors on windows and collecl on linux  -- other than above normal cpu usage everything else is normal

IMPORTANT NOTE : after a few hours the issue automatically fixes itself without us doing anthing.

if i stop the i/o intensive operations like spamassassin and antivirus scanning the issue fixes itself faster.

we recently had to move the vps guests from the host which was facing a problem to a different server where they worked fine. the host server fixed itself after around few hours after all the i/o stopped.

Initial setup of server via idrac network port

$

hi there,

I have heard that you can configure new dell servers via the idrac network port. i.e. connect your laptop with an ethernet cable to the idrac network port, login, mount an iso and you can install the OS.

This would be useful for us installing servers in branch office server rooms where we may not have the luxury of a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

I can't however find any instructions on this. Can anyone confirm if this is possible?

Cheers,

Hi,

I have a DELL PowerEdge 2900 III originally arrived with SAS 6i adapter E2K-UCS-61-(B).

I have received a PERC 6i adapter E2K-UCP-61-(B) installed it on my PE 2900 III instead of the SAS 6i.

Problem is that when I power on the server I am receiving the error:

Please check the SDRAM connection.

I have tried to remove all Hard Drives from the server and reboot but still the same.

Thanks for any help.

PowerEdge R610 Static Ears/Rails

Hello! I was hoping to get some help on some static ears/rails.

I received an R610 from my work recently and I am going to mount it vertically to the wall via Startech 19inch steall vertical rack.

I was hoping I could get some ears to help keep the server steady and not worry about the pull tabs in the front bending if theres no support to hold it in place.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated
