Dell PowerEdge R710 Operating System Reinstallation Query

Hi,

We have an R710 Physical Server that has the following configuration:

- 2 Hard Disk Drives configured in Raid-1 for the operating system

- 3 Hard Disk Drives configured in Raid-5 for data

- 1 Hard Disk Drive configured in Raid-0 for temporary data

The current operating system for this server is Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard Edition.

We have a requirement to replace the Server 2003 operating system on this server with Windows 2008.  The Raid-5 and Raid-0 configurations/data will need to remain intact and accessible under Server 2008.

We have two spare Hard Disk Drives that are of the same capacity as the current Server 2003 Operating System Hard Disk Drives (146Gb).

If I was to remove the current two Server 2003 Hard Disk Drives and replace them with the spare two Hard Disk Drives, could you please let me know the following:

- Would we encounter any problems installing Server 2008 onto the new Hard Disk Drives?

- Would we need to do anything with the current Raid-1 setup?

- If the Server 2008 installation failed (and we had to revert back to the 2003 installation), can we simplly re-insert the 2003 operating system disks and power the Server 2003 back online?

- Or would there be issues in doing this?  Can you please let me know what issues could arise and how we could overcome these issues

- Can you also please let me know if the 2003 server could be powered back on at all...

Thanks,

Brian.
