Brand New Dell R930

I simply need to know whether i get all 8 Memory Risers or only 4 Memory Risers upon new purchase of Dell R930 from DELL with 2 processors and 128GB RAM. Does the number of CPUs determine the number of Memory Risers after going through CTO (Configure to Order) ?

FX2s - FN 410 Aggregator and NetApp setup advise

Hello,

I have a new Dell FX2s.  It is populated with (4) FC630 Blade servers with 4 port NICs running ESXi 6.5

The back of the chassis has (2) FN 410 T Aggregator cards running in DEFAULT mode.

Also in my rack is a NetApp with (4) available 10 GB NICs.

Connecting all of these is a Cisco 9000 switches.  right now I am using 1 switch until my second arrives.

I have setup a port-channel on the switch for the (4) FN 410 ports and a port channel for each pair of NICs on the NetApp.  I have configured the switch per the Dell FN410 setup.  I am running LACP protocol.

1.  I am using this setup as an ESXi server cluster with the VMDKs on the NetApp.  The FN410 is new to me.  Has anyone done this before?  If so, can you post or message me a skeleton outline of how you have it setup?  I realize there a 100 steps, but an outline would be helpful

ex: each ESXi blade has X amount of NICs assigned to it with X amount of virtual switches.  How are your free NetApp NICS configured, etc.

2.  My main problem is I cannot get the FX2s chassis and the NetApp to see or ping each other.  They are on the same vlan and my switch is setup per Dell instructions,  A stand alone PC with 10 GB cards can ping both ways to the servers, so I know basic access port traffic is working.  I believe this issue is related to the FN 410 card.

If anyone has this problem solved, please let me know.

Thank you.

r410 not accepting hdds in tray 2

I picked up a couple r410s off ebay, and the 2nd tray in one of the servers will not accept an hdd. I have booted the server, seen drives in position 0,1, and 3 - but not in position 2. I swapped the drives, so I know there was a functional drive put into tray 2, and the same issue. I even pulled the chip that the hdds plug into, and replaced it with one that I know is function in tray 2 from an r310, and still no drive recognized in tray 2.

What is going on here? Help please.

Memory Configuration/Installation Issue

Hello,

I have 3 memory cards (16 GB each) that I need to install in R710 Dell server. There is already 8 memory cards (each 1 GB) in the machine. I am seeing memory configuration error when I try to install the 16 GB memory cards.

I have looked at owners manual and trying my best to balance the configuration.

During my last configuration, I did not get any error but the total memory was showing as 48GB and not 48+8=56 GB

Can someone suggest how to place the cards in the right slot (A1,B1 etc,)?

Thanks

Dell Poweredge R420 check serial port status

Hi,

I have a Dell Poweredge R420 as an ESXi server with many VM running. I need to configure my R420 to communicate to my UPS using the serial port.

I know that we can enable the serial port (COM 1) by rebooting the server and login to the System Services and check on it, but is there any other alternative way to check whether my COM 1 port is enabled? I don't want to power down my VMs.

If that's the case, is there any way to enable COM 1 port without rebooting the server?

Thank you.

Best regards,

Kong

I am a little new to Dell, I having a problem identifying the FX series Servers. I am currently trouble shooting a Windows Server OS problem, and all of the support documentation is always pointing to a Power Edge Server Generation, and how to read it from the first letter, number etc. However I cannot make sense of how the FX630 are read to identify the generation of the Server?

Hi all,

My environment consist of 3 M1000e chassis and I was having a case of one new Blade server not getting FlexAddress assigned even after checking it is enabled for the slot.

After applying the solution on this post I can notice the address changes when FlexAddress is enable and disable for the slot but my issue consist now on different address range between chassis.

I thought FlexAddress range was always the same 84:8F:69 is that right?

How to fix my chassis 01 then?

Chassis 01 - C8:1F:66:xx
Firmware 5.02

Chassis 02 - 84:8F:69:xx
Firmware 5.02

Chassis 03 - 84:8F:69:xx

I have a dual-processor PowerEdge R520, and I want to upgrade the memory, while retaining as many of my existing DIMMs as I can (all, preferably!). It currently has 32GB in 8x 4GB ECC DDR3 RDIMMs,1333MHz low volt single rank (Dell-331-4422). I'm looking at adding 2x 16GB ECC DDR3 RDIMMs, 1333 MHz  low-volt dual rank, PC3-10600. The R520 has three memory channels per processor, supporting up to 12 DIMMs I'm looking at the document ps2q09-20080414-Benson.pdf regarding Dell R520 memory configuration, but it's not clear to me how I should plan to configure the memory modules I have, or whether this upgrade is a good choice. Can I mix 16GB and 4GB DIMMs in the same channel? Which channel should use the larger DIMMs? Should I plan to purchase all new DIMMs if I want to increase the memory to 64GB? Can you advise?

Thanks!

Disk Speeds

Hi,

I note the following:

NOTE: The default setting for Disk Cache Policy for virtual disks based on SATA drives is Enabled; and for virtual disks based on SAS drives is Disabled.

Why is the SAS cache disabled? I thought it would make the disk faster to Enable it.

Is there a comprehensive White Paper discussing the various RAID settings for the latest controllers?

Thx,

T320 USB and Video

I have a PE T320 tower that has faithfully served me for almost 3 years. It was setup and placed in a network closet to be used as a server and hasn't been touched since. Until today...

I needed to make a couple of changes and connected a monitor plus kb and mouse. There's no video coming from the VGA port and it is a known good monitor and cable. Monitor turns on but just a black screen, no video. I rebooted the unit and get same result, even during boot and POST.

Also the rear USB ports will not work, none of them, front two work just fine.

I downed the box and moved NVRAM clear jumper, then powered up to boot.

Power off and reset jumper, booted back up with same result on both counts, video and USB.

Anyone have any ideas short of a new server or MB?

Thanks!

Virtual Disk commands using RACADM

Hi,

We wish to interrogate our fleet (Several generations of servers and controllers, including R730XDs) for their Storage Read and Write Policies.

We want to be able to change those policies if they do not meet our criteria.

I cannot find the specific RACADM commands to do the above. I have downloaded the paper RAID And Storage Configuration using RACADM Commands in iDRAC7, but cannot see the correct commands to use.

Can someone pls point me to the correct commands, starting with the interrogation command to see the status of the Read and Write Policies?

Thx for your help,

John Bradshaw

Purchasing RAM for PowerEdge R715

I have a Dell server (specs below) which contains 2 types of RAM. This is causing boot issues and I'd like to replace all the RAM to resolve the problem.

I don't know whether I should be purchasing RDIMM or UDIMM and if there is a need to choose over different options such as 2Rx4 or 2Rx8.

Explanations for understanding are welcome, RAM recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Dell PowerEdge R715 running:

Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

AMD Opteron processor 6272.2 2.10 GHz (2 Processors)

R720 front LCD display is not working. Can't find DRAC IP.

We have a remote location where a user made me aware of a server that had a fan running at "Mach5".  So I had the user look at the front display to find the DRAC IP address because my predecessor didn't think it was a good idea to keep documentation. The LCD isn't showing any information.  We rebooted the server last night remotely.  It would not boot back up as it was prompting to "press the f1 key to continue" this morning, but rather than giving me the reason why it was prompting, he just pressed the key to get the server booted up.  The front LCD display still isn't working.  The fan is still running at "Mach5", which I assume is 100% and I still don't know how to access the iDrac.

Please assist.

Hello

I have dell poweredge server 2900 and it has 8 slots for hard drive.  I have 5 slots of hard drive and rest of them are empty. slot 0 1 2 are working fine but rest of hard drive is not detecting. I checked with external hard drive machine and those are perfectly fine.

Only those 2 hard drive is not working in slots. I tried with all empty slots but still not detecting.

Can you please tell me at this stage what I have to look and what need to be replace?

R210 showing powerup diags 1 and 4

I have an R210 server that was built from a barebones chassis from eBay. The PS/Ram/CPU/MB were also bought on eBay. My question is this: IS there *any* other item from the above list that could cause the powerup diags 1 and 4 lamps to light? I know that the 1-4 combination indicates mainboard failure, but here's the thing. I've recieved two allegedly tested mainboards from the same eBay vendor that exhibited the same error on powerup. I returned those and bought another board from another non-eBay vendor and it exhibited the SAME error on powerup. I tried removing the ram and powering the system up, I got the expected "1" light indicating no ram present. I supported Dell servers in my job prior to retirement, but never really had to worry as we had onsite warrantee on all of our server systems. I find it hard to believe that 3 mainboards from two different vendors would exhibit the same failure/error code.. Hoping there is something else that is causing this error...

Thanks

Dave
