Dell R740 Compatible SATA SSDs - that don't make the fans run at full speed

Hi,

I installed a Samsung 850 Pro SSD into an R740. Thereafter, all the fans locked at ~18KRPM and did not budge.

I looked to see if there were any options for excluding that third party device from the thermal management. I could not find anything, and the System.ThermalSettings.ThirdPartyPCIFanResponse was not available (iDRAC9).

I have verified the Samsung 850 is the cause of the problem.

  • After removing and power resetting, the fans returned to normal.
  • After re-inserting, the fans went back to maximum speed.
  • After removing and power resetting again, the fans returned to normal.
This machine is being used for load and performance testing. We don't need expensive / long lived enterprise SSDs -- just size.
So my question is, is there something I can configure so that the Samsung is ignored in the calculations for thermal requirements and/or where do I find out what brands of SSDs are properly recognised for thermal management? (I'm thinking I'll have to buy a set of cheaper / smaller units to test which ones are compatible -- e.g. Intel, and then buy larger ones).
Or is there a published list of compatible drives with the R740.
BTW .. I also have installed a Samsung 960 Pro NVMe SSD without issue -- the fans run normally.
Thanks,
Jason
