PB: My MB video is non functional (black screen) although self-tests are all OK from the diagnostic software with video from the DRAC (this server is out of support).
It is very annoying to have no video when boot problems occur and I also have a limited grub functionality for video due to bad autodetect of the video types. I tried hard reset the server and even removing the processors as described elsewhere but no success. It seems some electrostatic charge has destroyed part of the video output capabilities (the light line apparently as the screen still flickers when booting but never shows white on black).
I found an old S3 Stealth 3D card (P/N23030231-204) with x8 PCI(E?) port that may replace the MB video but the orientation of the MB connector is reversed as compared to the IO_RISER2 present in the rack. On the riser card, the small 1x part is towards the back of the computer and the 8x towards the front while reverse when looking at a regular 8x PCIE card (including mine). The riser says explicitly 8x PCIE (part:PWBDM336REVA00). Does this mean it is a PCI. and not a PCIE card?
Can I use this card with a cable extension to mount the card reversed and place the cable plug with an insert to the back side of the rack?
I have other (real) PCIE cards but they have more than 8x and do not fit in the riser, can I buy a 16x to 8x cable for these? Will they be recognised by the R710 without specific driver install (ATI radeon type B170 or B629 AMD)
Thank you so much for ideas, support 'cannot' help me as this machine is not under support anymore.
